5 Acts of Kindness in 5 Minutes

November 22, 2016

Just another typical Tuesday morning

Within a 5 minute time period, five amazing volunteers had a positive impact on our seniors’ lives. Here is a short synopsis by staffer Lynn who had these 5 encounters:

Volunteer extraordinaire Glen is taking a resident out for a ride on the Duet Bike. Glen asks about a way to implement the Duet Bike program for a neighbouring seniors care facility. Glen is eager to spread the word. Not only a volunteer rider, Glen donated to help us purchase our first bike.

Jean, a horticulture volunteer, is returning from picking up donated flowers from our two local flower shops – Urban Fare and Divine Vines, who provide this service weekly. Jean is full of enthusiasm and cannot wait to get the bundles back so the residents can start making bouquets. We get so many flowers Jean needs to do two trips that day.

Located next to the greenhouse volunteer Sean is meticulously cleaning the bird cage. Sean has proudly performed this important weekly duty for over four years, making sure our birds are happy in a clean home.

Cori, our Volunteer Coordinator, shares news about Kelly and Sonya who have volunteered to make home-made Christmas cards for all 127 residents. Kelly has organized a group of friends to join in too. Sonya’s mother was a resident at Yaletown House and wants to stay involved.

Volker and Gary are returning from their weekly coffee outing in the community. Volker, a 2016 recipient of The Governor General’s Caring Canadians Award, has been volunteering here for over 10 years. His positive attitude is contagious.

All of these amazing stories really happened within five minutes of each other. Thank you Yaletown House Volunteers – We know there are many more wonderful stories out there share – but we just wanted to say YOU ALL ROCK!
